Hazy conditions continue to affect Singapore from time to time on a yearly basis, with the 24-hour PSI (Pollutant Standards Index) staying within the unhealthy range. While this is a cause for concern, it is not a reason to panic. Let’s be prepared to beat the haze.

What are the different levels of PSI reading?

PSI measures the air quality and indicates general severity of haze. A PSI reading of 101 and above is deemed unhealthy, and health advisories the will be issued whenever necessary.

Impact of haze on my health

Exposure to the pollutants in the air can cause respiratory symptoms and may aggravate existing heat or lung disease. It can also cause irritation to the eyes, nose and throat in healthy individuals.

Due to the worsening haze situation in Singapore, the Ministry of Health will be activating the Haze Subsidy Scheme. It will be available at all polyclinics and Public Health Preparedness Clinics (PHPC) from 16 September 2015.

Are you wearing the correct mask?

Respiratory masks, such as N95 masks, are designed to keep out fine particulate matter and hence protect the wearers from breathing in the smoke particles in the air. The mask should be changed when it gets soiled or distorted in shape.

A note of caution: surgical masks and paper masks do not provide adequate protection from haze particles. Their main purpose is to prevent the spread of body fluids and do not filter out haze particles. Below are 6-step guide to wearing your N95 mask.
