5 Things to Know About Sun Protection and Anti-Ageing

Living close to the equator means Singapore enjoys sunshine all year round. But it also means we’re exposed to stronger ultraviolet (UV) rays every day. While sunlight helps our bodies make vitamin D and lifts our mood, too much of it can lead to premature skin ageing and even skin cancer.

That’s why daily sun protection matters, not just on beach days or holidays, but every day. From understanding UV rays to choosing the right sunscreen, here are five things you should know to keep your skin healthy, radiant and well-protected under the Singapore sun.

1. Sun protection is crucial for anti-ageing

Over time, frequent sun exposure can lead to photo-ageing, a premature ageing of the skin caused by UV rays. This results in fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and loss of elasticity. Using sunscreen daily helps reduce UV damage, keeping your skin smoother and firmer for longer.

2. Not all sunlight is the same

Sunlight contains two main types of UV rays that reach our skin:

  • UVA penetrates deeper, causing wrinkles, sagging and age spots. It can even pass through windows and clouds.
  • UVB causes surface damage like sunburn and is linked to most skin cancers.

Both UVA and UVB can harm the skin, so it’s important to choose broad-spectrum protection that shields against both.

3. The type of sunscreen you choose matters

There are two main types of sunscreens:

  • Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them into harmless heat. They blend easily into the skin but may irritate sensitive skin types.
  • Physical sunscreens (containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) reflect UV rays away from the skin. They’re gentler and moisturising, though they may leave a white cast.

When choosing a sunscreen, look for SPF 30 or higher for UVB protection and PA+++ or higher for UVA protection.

4. Apply sunscreen the right way, and reapply it often

Even the best sunscreen won’t work if it’s not applied correctly. How do you apply it right? Use the “teaspoon rule”: one teaspoon for the face and neck, two teaspoons for the front and back of your body and one teaspoon for each arm. Don’t forget easily missed spots like your ears, back of the neck and tops of your feet!

You should also be sure to apply sunscreen at least 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure, and to reapply it every two hours – especially if you are sweating or swimming!

5. Sunscreen is not the only way

Sunscreen is your first line of defence, but other habits matter too. Try to:

  • Wear wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and long-sleeved or UV prevention clothing.
  • Seek shade between 10am and 2pm, when UV rays are strongest.
  • Add UVA-protective tints to home or car windows.
  • If you need to limit sun exposure, consider vitamin D supplements to maintain healthy levels safely.
