The year-end holidays are a time for gatherings, travel and celebration with your loved ones. But along with the festive cheer also comes the annual spike in cold and flu cases – and your immune system might need a little extra support to stay strong!
Did you know? While the common cold and flu share many symptoms, they’re caused by different viruses. Colds are usually milder and limited to a runny, stuffy nose or cough. Flu symptoms are more severe and include fever, body aches, sore throat, fatigue and cough.
If you do catch a cold or flu, there are a wide variety of over-the-counter options to support your recovery.
For running nose and sneezing
Antihistamines can help dry up nasal discharge. Sneezing will ease, and post-nasal (when mucus drips down the back of your throat) is reduced, which can help ease your coughing.
For blocked nose
Treat your blocked nose with a decongestant. As its name suggests, these relieve congestion and make breathing easier. These are available in both oral tablets and nasal sprays. Alternatively, you can try rubbing inhalants that contain ingredients like menthol, camphor or eucalyptus oil on your chest and throat. It may also help to do a rinse with salt water.
For fever, body aches or sore throat
Paracetamol or ibuprofen can reduce fever, muscle aches and sore throats. Medicated lozenges can also soothe your scratchy and irritated throat.
For cough
Pick your cough medicine based on the type of cough you have:
- Expectorants loosen phlegm so it’s easier to clear.
- Mucolytics break down thick mucus.
- Suppressants calm a dry cough.
- Herbal preparations with ivy leaf extract can provide gentle relief while supporting the lungs.
If unsure, consult a friendly pharmacist for advice on the right combination of medication for your symptoms!
To protect yourself from the cold and flu, it helps to ramp up on your hygiene and build healthy habits. Take these simple steps:
- Wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitiser.
- Cover your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing.
- Avoid touching your face unnecessarily.
- Rest well, stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet.
- Avoid smoking or inhaling cigarette smoke.
Most importantly, get vaccinated. The influenza (flu) vaccination is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce your risk of getting flu, especially during the busy year-end travel and festive season. It’s recommended for:
- Adults aged 65 and above
- Young children aged 5 and below
- Individuals with chronic illnesses or weakened immunity
- Caregivers or those living with vulnerable family members
